My Trans-City Quest: Club Monaco Jacket

So as I think I told you, Club Monaco had a 30% off sale on coats and other outerwear this past weekend. And as you may also know, they always have stuff on sale in the back left section in the Flatiron location (my favorite locale). Well, I tried on about 33 items and fell in love with this jacket. Hard to tell from this photo, but it evokes a certain military + Adam and the Ants circa 1981 feeling that just grabs me. However, they didn't have my size. So I asked if they could find out if another store in NYC had one. One salesman called to find out. I'm not sure what was going on, but it took no less than 15 minutes for him to get an answer, which was, "Yes, we have it at our store on Columbus. They are holding it for you."


Great! I asked for the cross street and he told me, "87th St."


So I walked to the subway and off I sped underground to be united with my (on sale) jacket. But when I got to 87th and Columbus guess what? Right. No Club Monaco. But I found one on 87th and Broadway. Oh joy! This must be the place! Wrong. They had it, but only in size "XS." However, they informed me that there was a store on Columbus...and 70th!


"Sigh, well, since I'm all the way up here I may as well check it out." So I walked the 19 blocks over and down, got to the store, explained how someone at their Flatiron store called to reserve this jacket for me.


Unfortunately they had no idea what I was talking about and looked at me like I was a wee bit nuts. My mission was probably too overwhelming to comprehend.

BUT! Just when I thought all hope (and an entire day) was lost, they found one in their basement! I tried it on, liked it, bought it and got back down to my apt. in time to construct a whole outfit around it for my evening plan.

Then, I haven't talked much about Club Monaco recently but they are having a sale starting today and going through June 26 so now I'm talking about them. 25% off already reduced merch.

My Latest NYC/Eating/Shopping Perspectives

Perhaps stereotypical of a New Yorker, I don't find myself at many typical tourist attractions. I've never been to the top of the Empire State Building, never to the Statue of Liberty, I'm not a big fan of Broadway, etc. But, I do love my annual jaunt to Coney Island/Brighton Beach, which will continue to become more of a tourist attraction for years to come.

The best neighborhood joint in my neighborhood is the Rodeo Bar & Grill, hands down. Good food, drink and free live music. The best late night joint in town? Well, I don't do late nights like I used to, but I guess I'd have to say L'Express on PAS - they serve food until all hours and you can get quite a "show" in there, depending on what time you arrive. The last cultural thing I did was attend an art auction in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at which I didn't buy anything, except a couple of drinks. I don't get to go to enough fancy schmancy restaurants, and now that my dad is retired, I can't even rely on him to take me anymore. However, we did recently go to the Gramercy Tavern and the food and atmosphere - and the hooker in the bright yellow mini dress from the 80s - were excellent. My friend is going to kill me for letting the cat out of the bag on this one, but the best bar to meet members of the opposite sex is Marshall Stack on Rivington St. Seems like men over the age of 28 are in there actually looking to talk to women in the same age group. Not exactly a fashion trend, but something that I have been most pleased with during the past couple of years is that shoes and boots have really upped the ante. There was a phase there in the 90s where I could hardly find a pair I liked, but now I am overwhelmed with the selection that not only suits my tastes, but also encourages me to take some fashion risks that I might not have taken before. Oh, and one request to the footwear designers who are reading this: please keep making tall leather boots that fit around normal sized calves. Thank you. My favorite brand? Well I find myself in Club Monaco's sale section all too often, but on a more elite scale, I can't believe the genius behind Marc Jacobs. And while I can't afford to buy even a T-shirt, I am blown away by his style sensitivities, and perhaps more than that, his marketing approach! Other brands large and small should take note.

p.s. Howdja like my new logo? I have another one to unveil tomorrow. I think this one is my favorite though.

Black Friday: Club Monaco

I would normally tell everyone, "don't believe the hype" surrounding Black Friday shopping. It's a nightmare and you'll get as good as - if not better - deals if you wait until the last few days leading up to Christmas (never mind those post-Christmas sales!).

However, leave it to the marketing wizards at Club Monaco to pique my interest in possibly venturing outdoors on Friday, November 23.

Sizes: Club Monaco vs. H&M

Well by now you all should know that I am a "Club Monaco Ho." I can't get enough of that store. I think it has to do with my undying love of the 80s, which I feel "The Club" regularly invokes. I tend to visit the one down on Fifth Avenue, fly back to the sale section and try tons of stuff on, then allow myself one or two "full priced" items from the front. Even when things don't fit me, I don't curse them for mal-sizing. I feel like the sizes are fair - the bottoms are true, if not a bit generous, and the tops are perhaps a bit on the small side, but I tend to need bigger tops than bottoms, so I should blame my hulking back and not the store.

Then, even though I have sort of dissed it, I sometimes run across (yes, I RUN, like the wind!) the street to H&M where I sometimes find pants worth the mere $35 that they usually cost. However, I find that H&M is a little skimpy on the sizing - I can barely squeeze into an 8, which I can usually do without much fanfare at other stores. Often 10s are even too small.

Ladies, for those not in the know, the cheaper a store is, the more likely the sizes are going to be skimpy. Well, at least when you're dealing with most American, mass-market apparel.

New G-Star Store / Club Monaco Sale

I walked past the new G-Star store on Broadway around 20th St. the other day and almost confused it with the Duane Reade that it sits next to. Meaning, the store was very bland, anti-septic and pharmacy-like...and not in a good way (see photos). I didn't go in, so I am providing you with limited sensory feedback, but it didn't entice me, which is what I thought a retail store was supposed to do...

So in the meantime, go to Club Monaco and get stuff on the cheap.

Sales Galore! + early returns on iPhone

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen more sales going on in one weeknd in my life! From Lord & Taylor to Bloomingdales, Saks, Macy's, Club Monaco, DSW, TeCasan...and on and on. THIS is a great weekend to go out and renew your wardrobe and possibly your entire home!

And the early word on the street from a Pacific Northwest stringer is that the iPhone lives up to the hype.

Ozone?

So I've been told that they do some kind of Ozone cleaning thing to get the smoke scent out of fabrics. Cross your fingers that this works on my beloved smoke-infested wardrobe.

Tonight I spent hours this evening shopping for work and gym clothes as well as makeup and food at: Sports Authority, Aveda, Club Monaco, H&M and CVS in an fast ditch effort to get some semblance of a wardrobe together. So fast and furiously by the time I got to H&M they said my card was "declined" - I called the bank and they were suspicious of all of the activity so put a hold on it!

A first for GSNYC. Tragedy begets comedy...

Lots o' shopping

I have been running errands and attaching all kinds of shopping opportunities into the mix. Here's the rundown:

1. I quit NYSC (New York Sports Club). It kind of stinks. There's a lot of them, and several in my neighborhood...but just because there are lots of McDonald's around doesn't mean you should eat dinner there every night.

2. I joined Equinox. Yeah, hells yeah, it costs more. But! I got a good deal through my company's corporate rate and therefore escaped paying any initiation fee. It will cost me $118/month and I had to sign a year contract. But, dude, it is SO MUCH NICER. I want to move in. I haven't worked out there much yet, so I can't comment on the class/trainers yet, but I have a feeling it will be better than average. I have a personal training session set up for next week. Will let you know how that goes.

3. So! I had to buy some new work out clothes, obviously. So I went to Paragon Sports, arguably the world's most expensive sporting goods store. But I was in the 'hood, they have lots of stuff, and I did get one thing on sale. Not a great sale, but a sale nevertheless. Everyone always makes fun of my pajama bottoms and huge T-shirts, so I'm trying to mix it up and look MILF-ish (except for the part where I am not a mother).

4. And since I was in the general neighborhood, I had to make my bi-monthly stop in at Club Monaco. I got a skirt for $19 and top for $29...well worth it. That sale section is really something else!

5. I also stopped in at Barnes & Noble, sat on the floor, and read almost an entire book - for free! Now THAT'S a bargain.
