A group of  women came in with their driver from Connecticut for discounted designers includin Prada, Ferretti, Chanel, and Balenciagia - one of them left wearing her brand new boots.  Check the lower level for contemporary lines like Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe - the Bergdorf 5F brands.
This Roundabout store is one of four in the area (two in Greenwich and one on the UES). Don't be a turkey this Thanksgiving - check for an eclectic selection.

Consignment Downtown: Second Time Around

Second Time Around at 262 Mott Street consignment as cool as its boutique -- brand neighbors like Rebecca Taylor.

This NoLita spot is so popular that you need to make an appointment to consign. Thirty-minute and hour long appointments go quickly.
1. Tags - still "fresh from the store" - these boo-boo buys will yield the most cash.

2. Call in advance to see if they are "full" - consignment shops are well-stocked right now. Try again in a month to see if stocks are depleted and they have room for more.

3. Scout the location in advance - No need to drag all your goodies - for example a downtown shop of the same chain may offer hipper labels than an uptown one, which may have more classic brands and styles.

4. Rejected? - Ask the consignee questions - find out if they are the right brand, style for the store, condition of item, or if they would the be welcome at another time of year.

5. Consign early and often - mid-March for Spring/Summer and mid-August for Fall/Winter

Mostly for women, but men check out the tie selection if you are in the 'hood of this Massachusets-based emporium of more than 20 stores.

Three Stores I Happened Upon and Really Like

Exquisite Costume: I accidentally happened upon this vintage boutique on a part of Broome St. that I may have never tread on before. I was pretty blown away by the selection, which includes pieces from the 1800s! The pictured dress from the 60s can be purchased immediately off the website for $600.

New York Vintage: I must have gone into this Chelsea-located store before, right? It is amazing! It's not your run-of-the mill vintage store, it's more like falling back in time into the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer dressing room circa 1939 (well, except for the part where they have clothes that are newer than that, but you get my drift). Clean, vibrant, extremely well-organized and flush with thrilling apparel this place is celebrity-status. Literally. Stylists, get your vintage Oscars gowns here. And for those of you who have (top-conditioned) clothes and accessories that you inherited from your grandmother but will never wear or use, you might be able to make some money. Give 'em a call - 212-647-1107.

Pas de Deux: I happened upon this fine boutique on my way to Veniero's the other night, which may be why I probably could not fit into anything! Just amazing clothes from top designers such as rag & bone and Philip Lim, et al. Not cheap, but inspiring to peruse...

"School" Shopping: Madewell & Metal Pointus

So that nice human I mentioned the other day thought I needed some (more) clothes and jewelry. And indeed I did.

But perhaps as important, I have two new tidbits to impart:

1. If you want some kickass v-neck T-shirts that come in excellent T-Shirt colors and are as soft as you like, go to Madewell (486 Broadway), where they are offering two-for-$30. My only issue is that they are marketing them as "the 'boyfriend' T." This angle is now officially annoying. Everywhere I look, "the boyfriend blazer," "the boyfriend sweater," "the boyfriend flannel.." OK, we get it, the oversized look is back! Additionally, there's something un-feminist about the whole idea. "Oh I just want to spend my day wearing Todd's T-shirt, so that I have a little piece of him at all times!" That's creepy, and believe me, Todd does not feel the same way about you. He's worried about baseball and the hot new receptionist at his office.

2. I am not a huge jewelry fanatic, but when I find a store I like, I fall in love. Such is the case with Metal Pointu's (252 Elizabeth St.). Lots of big metal jewelry that weighs a lot. So if you are into the pretty little delicate look, this is probably not the place for you. But if you want a bad ass ring, like the one pictured above, that sort of reminds you of a Sleestak, then I highly recommend it.

Jaime Mascaro: Los Zapatos Nuevos Y Verdes

The nicest human on the big island begifted me with this fancy fabulous fun pair of green patent leatha shoes from the much more Euro-than-American Jaime Mascaro on West Broadway in Soho.

Why is it that whenever I tell a Euro shoe store that I'm a size 9 they bring me a size 39, which is actually an 8-1/2? Well anyway, just keep that in mind and sleep well tonight knowing that they had a size 40 (aka 9) that fit lovely.

I am so looking forward to wearing these kitten heels with hot pink soles when the sidewalk least expects it.

No dressing room. No air conditioning. But a charming fox terrier, a sample sale veteran, who sat quietly watching the parade of super skinny sample sales shoppers trying on dresses that retailed at toney retailers for more than $1,400 for under $300, without a single yelp. The "Bandage Dress" sold for just $400. Cover girls apparently are recessionistas too. One showed last night looking for a bag, but left without a single purchase.

Note to self for next year: sneak into the Friends and Family the day before. Sample skirts sized 2-4 from current and past seasons priced from $62 to over $100. A pop-art purple stretchy top for $200. If you've always wanted Proenza, be forewarned since selections are small, sizes are only for those who are naturally tiny or having been losing weight over the economy. Merch moving quickly. Staff friendly. If you've somehow squirrelled away any $$ after running to any of the hundreds of sample sales this year, or have found your own stimulus package, it's worth a peek. (Yes, GSNYC contributor Nancy Brenner was there!)

100 Stores, Restaurants and Galleries Expected to Participate

The Association for Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (A.C.E.) and The SoHo Partnership will host a shopping event to raise money for New York City’s homeless men and women. During the Stroll, shoppers will have exclusive access to discounts and promotions in each participating store, gallery or restaurant. Promotions will range from discounts to free samples to complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Funds raised will go to the SoHo Partnership.

Shoppers will purchase a $20 bracelet, which will grant them admission to the Stroll and qualify them for discounts and promotions. Bracelets will be for sale at the SoHo Stroll Welcome Booth at the corner of Spring and Wooster Streets.

June 6: 5th Annual Housing Works Open Air Street Fair

FREE! On June 6 Crosby Street between Prince and Houston in Soho will be closed to cars as thousands of donated books, records and CDs will be on sale for for $1 a piece, plus clothing, shoes, accessories and housewares from Housing Works Thrift Shops.

Additionally, The Works outdoor cafe will be serving sliders, sweets and beverages. Sixpoint will be beer served up by Puck Fair in the beer tent and ice cream from Van Leeuwen.

All profits go to Housing Works, which provides lifesaving services for homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.
