Let me tell you about the fabulous Cynthia Steffe sample sale - I bought five items for $75 including a black patent leather jacket that still had the $550 tag hanging from it and the dress was $265 from the holiday collection. It will be a holiday for me next year when I rock this $15 frock! These are not recession prices. These are depression prices. There were tons of people on line waiting to get in this morning - even in the torrential rain and the women were hemming and hawing about hitting Tracy Reese, Catherine Malandrino, the Spade sale, etc. It was one of the most hectic sales I've ever been to - hardly anything except for coats and leather was more than $25. Women walked out with whole wardrobes. The mirror situation was tight - only four and hard to find - hogged over by a few women - as is usually the case in these situations. Two were totally hijacked by groups of friends or frenemies and acted as if they brought the mirror with them to the sale - you know the type. Again, if you are the sample size, go to the sale in-person, otherwise hit the Gilt Group one online.

The prices at Cynthia Steffe have always been good and guess a combination of the recession and the secret getting out made the sale a madhouse today. I have never seen it so bad before--they really should have exercised some crowd control. Only a few blocks away there were sample sales with prices that were similar or comparable with virtually no people.
Five items for $75? Not bad. The only place I have been able to find such cheap deals is Target.
You're right about depression prices! Prices at this year's Cynthia Steffe sample sale were by far the best I've ever seen. I paid more for lunch that day than I did on a skirt ($15 vs $235 retail price!).
BUT, bargain shoppers beware-- you're entering a treacherous environment. Between the aggressive, half naked women, moving clothes racks and flying clothes hangars (seriously), I feel lucky to have made it out alive. Not to mention the fact that the room looked like it had been torn through by a Tasmanian devil by the time I got there at 10:30am.
But the pleasant staff and amazing prices made the experience worthwhile. Can't wait for next year!
