Last night's Simkhai Show Debuted Collab with Ben-Amun

Inventive and certain to be conversation starters, the Isaac Manevitz collaboration for Jonathan Simkhai's modern Fall 2011 line showcases tassels - leather no less. Adorning wrists, fastening a draped dress
secured by a safety pin, or hanging seductively from leather cords coiling into necklines, tassels graduate into an accessory not just for exotic dancers. Also of note, metal upside-down T-shaped earrings.
The ever-versatile Manevitz and his amiable wife Regina showcased and viewed the presentation at the Zach Feuer Gallery last night.

Brooklyn Flea Market is...

Eh.

I mean there were a few unique things, but most of it was stuff that you see at other flea markets. And not while not wildly overpriced, certainly not cheap. For example, there were some really interesting, seemingly high quality, vases and mirrors, but for $195 and $600 respectively? Come on! Also, I was hoping that Brooklyn would kick out more jams hard core-style - like a booth selling custom-made leather lingerie or something. But alas, there wasn't too much of that, with slight exceptions:

• Wrecords by Monkey - Handmade recycled record accessories (see pic.) - interesting decorated wrist cuffs made out of old records that made me feel wonder-womanlyish when I tried a few on.
• Mohawk Studios - Welding, fabricating and custom steel creations. If I had managed to make my apartment more urban-hard-rock, I would have bought some of this guy's stuff - interesting coffee tables, chairs and other creations that appeared to be a bit torture chamber-like. Oh and giant bugs made out of railroad ties and nails.
• Celle Adore - Perfumes that smelled 100% like girl. Uncommon scents.
  

Woodstock & Saugerties: Potential part II

(Continued from yesterday...) Then, how fitting is it that my "very special friend" (who recently made the move into the 'woods' for a new job) and I happened to stumble upon Saugerties' one-night annual open house/late shopping night (late being 8 p.m. - this is Saugerties, folks)? The fun folks at Ya Ya's Emporium, which sells funky accessories, global gifts and vinyl records (I'm plagarizing their business card...) were so taken with my Barbara Feinman hat (see my earlier "hat" post, including photo), that we got into a discussion about Guerilla Shopper. Hopefully they'll visit and see themselves in e-black and white!

The store is full of cute, reasonably priced jewelry, bags, wallets, gloves and a great little collection of records in the back including jazz and more. Check it out if you're in the 'hood. It's fun for the whole family!

Portolano sample sale - This Week

Portolano's sample sale is going on now - today, tomorrow and Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Located on the 11th floor of 15 West 37th St., this sale offers gloves, knits, small leather goods, handmade Italian silk ties, cashmere coordinates and Emilio Cavallini hosiery. Be prepared to hand over your coat, purse, and first born at the door.

Now, I love leather gloves. I happily wear them for five or six months straight every year. And this sale has hundreds, maybe thousands of styles and colors. But I didn't buy any. Why? Well, I'm hoping I can subtly hint that I need a few pair for Christmas - nice ones - in black, red and "surprise me." But I was also not impressed with the prices. I guess I was recently spoiled by the $1,500 worth of stuff for $100 Calypso sample sale, but a $50 pair of leather gloves that I will likely lose doesn't ring of true sample sale pricing to me.
