Origins: Free Stuff

I am a fan of Origins. I tried to fight it, but I relented. They have really cool skin, hair and makeup products that smell and feel good. Have you tried their A Perfect World™ White tea skin guardian? You should; I do.

So right now, as in this weekend only, they're giving away a free one-week supply of the new Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Plantidote Mega Mushroom Treatment Lotion with any $25 purchase (plus free shipping)! The special ends March 30th, which is Sunday. Perhaps you could buy a 1.7 oz. bottle of Ginger Essence skin scent and get your free stuff? Go on. Smell good; I do.

Trash Talk...by Nike

OK, how cool are these by the way?

BY RIMA SUQI
Nike's latest basketball-shoe collaboration will surprise many. Not because of its player affiliation—in this case, Phoenix Suns All-Star guard Steve Nash—but because of the materials used. The Trash Talk shoe is made entirely of recycled materials—manufacturing waste, to be exact: everything from the scrap-leather upper to the scrap-ground-foam midsole to the environmentally preferred rubber outsole. The whole thing is packaged in a fully recyclable cardboard box. And though not available in the rest of the states until April 22, you can score a pair in the city now. He shoots, he scores.
$100 at House of Hoops by Foot Locker, 268 W. 125th St., nr. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.; 212-316-1667.

Berne Mev Shoes???

I was in the grocery store the other day (the name of which I will not mention because I refuse to provide them with ANY free publicity) and some woman came calling after me, "MISS! MISS!!!" I stopped in my tracks figuring it was my long-lost billionaire aunt who had hunted me down so as to leave me all of her money. But alas, it was just an older woman who had spied my Berne Mev shoes and loved them so much that she HAD TO KNOW where I got them. To her disappointment, I got them in a shoe store in Westwood, NJ in about 1994! I never wear them. They are like these funny old elastic loafers that I was wearing so that I could walk to and from work without killing myself. I took a quick look and this brand - that I only know because I still have the shoe box - doesn't even have its own Web site! Anyone have a clue about this footwear brand?

Guerilla Goer-Outer

The GS hasn't been a devoted shopper lately; she seems to have become a Guerilla goer-outer. While this has been fun and social, it's not doing much for her waistline. Alas, here is an incomplete list of where I have tread lately:

M Shanghai (Williamsburg) - interesting hipster Chinese restaurant with private cavern in basement, where friend had bday party.
Bar Great Harry (Smith St., BK) - Basic Brooklyn bar with tons of beer.
Louise & Jerry's (Hoboken) - Bar on Washington with great jukebox. A dying breed. Get there while you can.
Astoria (as in Queens) - Friend's party...
Blind Tiger Ale House - West Village pub with lots o' beers (used to be on Hudson St., now on Bleecker) and some good bar food.

I also did a little looking around for the chandelier I aspire to own - including checking out what few things are left at Domain furniture on Broadway. They had a cute little chandi for half price ($250), but I didn't LOVE it, so I let it go. I also checked out ABC Carpet, for price comparison - and while I did LOVE their lighting inventory, I wasn't so willing to fork over a minimum of $675. It also makes me kind of ill that had I known Domain was going out of business I would have saved about $800 on the wardrobe I bought 2 weeks before the Chapter 11 news broke. Yargh!

Totes!

I was going to write today off. I just had no content to offer. I'm not sure that I really do now, but a major GS fan just suggested that if I go out tonight in the rain, that I should make sure to wear my Totes. Which is completely hilarious because I would sooner drown than wear Totes. But now I wonder, could even I make Totes seem cool?

Spitzer: When Purchases Go Very Wrong

I tried to come up with some angle that would enable me to include the most major news du jour on this blog. One of my faithful subjects pointed out that Spitzer's "purchase" really got him in trouble. And he lives in NYC. So it's kind of relevant. Anyway, unless you live under a very large rock, you know the story of our Governor gone wrong.

I find that those who seem to be most righteous and judgmental of others are often doing it as a way to divert attention from their (often worse) wrongdoings. Or perhaps it is a way to exonerate guilt. "I am a-moral but I will force everyone else to be moral. That way it will even out in the universe." It's some kind of weird power tactic.

That said, it is also heartbreaking that someone the public had so much faith in to do the right thing so totally did the wrong thing. He was supposed to protect us from the kind of person that he turned out to be. Imagine how his family must feel?

Shake Shack Heading to UWS

I am reading in Crain's New York Business magazine that my favorite local food joint: The Shake Shack, is opening its second at 366 Columbus Ave. (77th St.) in the space that once housed the Museum Cafe and Jacques-Imo's NYC. The original SS shall remain happily in Madison Square Park, near the Flatiron Building.

DSW: I saved $345 on Donna Karan Collection Shoes

I haven't purchased much in the way of apparel recently, but because I am a rewards member, I had a $40 off reward from DSW burning a hole in my wallet. So yesterday, I trucked to Union Square to change it from paper into "shoe gold." Well, not only did I score a pair of Donna Karan Collection black satin flats, but I did so at a savings of $345! (I paid just a touch under $50.) Yes, that means that these "slippers" originally cost (or so they say) $395, which is totally nuts. Even at DSW's "original" price they were like $299 - also insane. But then they were on sale at 70% off. Combine that with my $40 reward and voila - $49.98! There was one other pair - size 9 if you are so inclined to join the anti-retail revolution with me!

te casan...by Natalie Portman

So have you heard about te casan's new(ish) Natalie Portman line? It's a vegan-friendly line that Mizz Portman thinks is imperative because it is difficult to "find designer shoes made of alternative materials. Has she not heard about Stella McCartney? What about MooShoes?

Project Runway - Congratulations...

Christian.

(I knew it - I even texted P.R. to say that he should be the winner....the GSNYC knows...SHE KNOWS!!!).

The final three were truly awesome, but I think I still would have liked to have seen all of Chris March's line - in fact I was thinking that they should have picked him over Rami, but that's possibly just my goth side shrieking.

Anti-Style from the Beastie Boys

I love the Beastie Boys for many reasons, one of them being that during their extensive career they have pretty much maintained the same demeanor and style. The urban-anti-style that so many a white boy have taken on. It allows you to be cool and lazy at the same time. It says "I'm smart but not stupid." I saw them last night at Terminal 5 and am glad to report they are still as unfashionably fashionable as always.

Check out the upcoming sales from Shelly and Renee, and on the other side of the tracks, Housing Works:

Also, I have ordered three mirrors (see pic.) for my hallway/entrance on clearance at Target.com - Cross your fingers for me that they aren't broken or hideous. I couldn't help myself - they were $40 each!

Paul Stuart Sale Starts Tomorrow

Another great tip from New York magazine's Best Bets today. This one sounds better than the Barneys Warehouse Sale, if you ask me -- particularly if you are on the more conservative side (listen up Father Guerilla)...

Men's and women's clothes and accessories from Paul Stuart are up to 75 percent off; a blue houndstooth suit was $1,084 but is now $271.
When: 3/4–3/6 (9–6:30); 3/7 (9–5).
Where: 317 W. 33rd St., nr. Eighth Ave. (718-747-1656)

Trunk Show: March 11 in Soho

So this doesn't sound ALL THAT, but if you are in the 'hood and bored, what the heck?

90% off at Barney's Warehouse Sale Today

While I was cleaning and putting together some DIY pieces of furniture (a bathroom shelving unit and a coat rack - I DO NOT recommend doing this), I received a note from a loyal GS blog reader regarding today at Barney's Warehouse sale. I'm hoping somebody got this on tape:

"It was sheer madness - the guy trying to manage the line outside, which curled around seventh to who knows where announced "enter at your own risk" - no hair pulling, biting or fighting - you can check your stroller at the door, but not your baby - and of course, ladies you need to check your big bags - you know who you are!"
